The Department of Physics, Government Girls’ General Degree College Kolkata, was established in the year 2016 affiliated by the University of Calcutta. At present, we offer three years undergraduate courses for Physics Honours with CBCS implementation along with Mathematics and Chemistry as GE subjects. And the four-year undergraduate programme (Curriculum and Credit Framework) comes with minor options of Mathematics, Economics and Chemistry (any two). Topics covered in the curriculum include Electrostatics, Wave and Optics, Quantum and Classical Mechanics, Nuclear and Particle Physics and more. With the right combination of electives, this course will not only allow you to explore your interests and discover your strengths but amplify your readiness for a range of careers. We offer a fully functional well-equipped laboratory and seminar library from where students borrow books regularly. We believe in delivering a homely atmosphere to the students so that they can grow full to their possibilities. Faculties are actively involved in research and are publishing quality research papers in many reputed scientific journals regularly which motivate the students towards higher studies. Regular attendance and sincerity are expected from the students.

The Department of mathematics of the Government Girls’ General Degree College, Ekbalpur has started its journey since the inception of the college in 2016.The department started offering three years (1+1+1) (Honours) degree course in Mathematics and also offered a two-year Mathematics (General Course) along with it for other Science Department.

From 2018, Mathematics(Honours) and General was also offered under CBCS. From 2023, Mathematics (Major) and minor and Multidisciplinary course are offered under CCF. From the inception, teachers of this department worked relentlessly to impart quality education to their students and tried to motivate them to imbibe the ideas and information related to Mathematics. During the Corona Pandemic, the department tried to facilitate all its students in the e-learning process through various virtual modes.

About the Department:

The Department of Geography works to derive a better understanding of our mother planet, to develop a comprehensive understanding about the resources that support the society and to meet the challenges of sustainability. A variety of methods and tools are employed to address different research questions, that includeseducational field trips, laboratory and experimental studies, remote sensing and Geographical Information System techniques and computer modelling. The Department is presently offering undergraduate Hons. course degrees to undergraduate degree students in GEOGRAPHY.The Department of Geography is committed and devoted to educate a new generation scholars who will reflect the diversity of intellectual perspectives, life experiences, and cultural backgrounds represented in society today.

History of the Department:

The Department of Geography started in July 2016 Academic year in the college. There was a long pending demand for this course to be introduced in this university. The department started its journey with two permanent faculty members, 12 Hons. undergraduate students and one laboratory non –teaching staff member. Being an affiliated college under the University of Calcutta, the department in the academic session 2016-2017, started teaching the annual system course offered by the University for undergraduate Hons. Students. Later on from 2018-2019 academic session the department started teaching the semester based CBCS course offered by the University of Calcutta together with the annual system. The annual system course curriculum continued upto 2019-2020 academic session.

  • To provide affordable quality education to each individual student taking admission in the department.
  • To facilitate students with knowledge and skills in their chosen stream, inculcate values, identify their hidden talents, provide them every possible opportunities to realize their full potentials.
  • To enable the students to pursue post graduate course in same or allied field and to get absorbed in suitable jobs where they can apply their subject knowledge gained from under-graduate and post graduate studies.
• Mission:
  To lead the development of academic, educational, and research directions of human and natural systems, Urban and Rural Problems and geospatial information science, harnessing the integrative nature of geographic science to answer fundamental questions of local, regional and global importance.

Teaching Learning during the COVID period (2020 March to 2021 November):

At the recent time under the pandemic situation due to COVID 19, the concepts of Blended Learning and Flipped Learning were adopted extensively where unlimited participation in teaching learning process can be facilitated via web.

So keeping the above in mind and to facilitate the pupils at the best possible way, the action plans followed by the teachers in the Geography Department under the Covid 19 situation include the following:

• The Department has continued from the part where the teaching got stopped since 21st March 2020. The Department started taking online classes for CBCS students since 25th March2020 on regular basis (almost 3 to 4 classes for each CBCS batch on all working days).
• The Department provided the necessary reading material/audio-video content online through email, whattsapp etc. to students of different batches.
• The Department also facilitated the students by providing OER (open educational resources) links for further study of different topics both under theory and practical.
• Assignments were provided to the students on regular basis in online classes which were conducted on synchronous platforms like Zoom and Google Meet. The term end University exams together with Internal assessments are all conducted for different batches using Zoom platforms. The entire session of internal assessment are also recorded in the Zoom platform session.

The Department of Economics of Government Girls’ General Degree College, 7, Mayurbhanj Road, Kolkata -23 was established in the year of 2016. The first academic session initiated on 2016-2017 with an order of Higher Education Department, Government of West Bengal and the affiliation of University of Calcutta.

The Honours course was introduced in the department since its inception. Since then, informative lectures along with ample study material have been provided by the esteemed faculty members to the students. The B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. Honours and General courses introduce students to the basics of Micro economics, Macroeconomics, Quantitative techniques, Development economics, Statistics and econometrics, Environmental economics, Financial economics, International trade, Public economics etc. Students in the department are motivated to pursue higher studies to enhance their knowledge and compete in various national and state-level administrative services examinations. With this aim in mind, the departmental teachers organize class lectures; discussion on current affairs and tutorial classes through which the students can get a broader perspective of the latest socio-economic scenario.The department follows Three Year Degree course (1+1+1), CBCS & CCF (under NEP) syllabus as directed by University of Calcutta. The department provide infrastructural facilities like classroom, departmental library, also shares all other central infrastructure of the college like ICT enabled classroom, central library etc.

Department of Chemistry, Government Girls’ General Degree College, affiliated to University of Calcutta was established in 2016-17 academic session with two faculty members Dr.Bhaswati Bhattacharya (HOD) and Dr.Mumu Chakraborty, both with specialization in Organic Chemistry and one laboratory assistant Mr.Kartik Chandra Das. Students of the first batch were Rushda Amin, Saba Noor Khan and Roushni Firdous. Within one year, the department became well equipped with sophisticated instruments, three laboratories, ICT enabled classroom and seminar library. During lockdown (session 2020-21 and 2021-22) both the teachers continued their classes in online mode and students from this department prepared sanitizer under the supervision of Dr.Mumu Chakraborty and distributed it in local shops and police station. After lockdown full-fledged offline classes started. Students from this department also go to Moulana Azad College and Asutosh College for attending lectures and practical classes on Physical and Inorganic Chemistry. A number of good students passed out from this departments with more than 75% marks and many of them have now completed or perusing master degree course. Few of them are also doing job in different educational institutes.

In 2021, Mr.Kartik Chakdra Das retired and Mr.Tuhin Chowdhuri took the charge as laboratory assistant. From 2023, Dr.Mumu Chakraborty took the charge as Head of this department and continuing in the same post. Both the teachers from of this department got promotions while working in this college. Every year, teachers from this department perform multiple university assignments. Since 2017, this department has organised many seminars under the supervision of Dr.Mumu Chakraborty. Hope in future, this department will flourish more.

Participative Learning:

Students of chemistry department participated in seminars and also presented posters on specified topics.

Use of ICT Tools:

• Teachers use power point presentation in classroom.
• Google classroom has been formed for every semester for slow as well as advanced learners.
• Suitable you tube videos are shared regularly in different topics on theory and practical.

Mechanism of Internal/External assessment:

As per university rule

Grievance Redressal System:

• Students give letter to HOD.
• A meeting is arranged with the student, accused, eye witness and all the departmental teachers.
• If the problem is not solved in this departmental meeting, then another meeting is arranged with the Principal and all the above persons.
• Verification of the grievance is done.
• Necessary action is taken against the accused.
