About the Department:

The Department of Urdu was established since the inception of college since 2016. The Department of Urdu works to drive a better understanding of Urdu Language and Literature and try its best towards students and Surrounding because Learning Urdu is essential in today’s world for several reasons. Firstly Urdu is one of the most widely spoken Languages, with millions of speakers in Countries like India, Pakistan and several other South Asian regions. By Learning Urdu, students can effectively communicate and connect with a diverse and vast Population. Knowing and command of Urdu can provide significant common Professional and advantages. Urdu Proficiency can enhance students Professional Profile and broaden their career prospects in ẩn increasing inter connected world.

The department always tried to expose the students to the aesthetics of Urdu literature and language. This trend had been carried out since the inception of the college. The department always helped the students to bring out the talent and creative abilities among the students. The department of Urdu and the assistant teachers believe in fostering literary sensibilities among the students.

The Urdu Department is presently offering Undergraduate Honours Degree Course. The department of Urdu is committed and devoted to educating a new generation scholar who will reflect the diversity of intellectual prospectives, life experiences and cultural backgrounds represented in society today.

The Department consistently endeavours to expose students to the profoundly valuable aesthetics of Urdu literature and language. This has remained a steadfast tradition since the establishment of our esteemed College. The department actively nurtures student talent and creative abilities, with assistance from experienced faculty members within the Department of Urdu. Our departmental philosophy endorses fostering literary sensibilities in order for students to develop into accomplished writers themselves or cultivate an understanding and appreciation towards poetic expression arts.

History of the Department:

The Department of Urdu Started in July 2016 Academic year in the College. The Department started its journey with one permanent faculty member, 24 honours under graduate Students. Being an affiliated College under the University of Calcutta, the department in the Academic Session 2016-2017, started teaching the annual system course offered by The University for Undergraduate-honours. Students on from 2018-2019 Academic Sessions the department started teaching the semester based CBCS Course offered by the University of Calcutta together with the annual System. The annual system course curriculum continued upto 2019- 2020 Academy Session. Second permanent faculty of the department join this colloge on September 2022.

The Guest teachers from different universities and colleges have held to running from the beginning. The department seeks their advice and guidance for functioning it. Prof. (Dr.) Shamim Anwar, former professor, Dept. of Urdu, Calcutta University, Prof. (Dr.) S.M. Shabbar, former Professor, P.G. Dept of Urdu, Hooghly Mohsin College, Renowned Urdu short story writer Mrs. Shahirakhatoon Prof. Abu Baker Jeelani, Former Associate professor, Dept. of Urdu, Khidderpore college. have served their experience as guest lecturer in Dept. of Urdu, they gave a new dimension to the department.

Special lecture was delivered by Prof. Ghulam Haider, Former Professor, Dept. of Urdu, Calcutta University, Mr. Md. Mushtaq, Ex-guest Professor Dept of Urdu, HiralalMajumdar Memorial for girls, Dr. Shaheen Parveen, Assistant Professor of Dept. of Urdu, Shri Shikshayatan College, Dr. Zahida Praveen, Assistant Professor (SACT) Dept. of Urdu, B.C. College Asansol, Dr. Nakhat Jahan, Guest teacher, Dept. of Urdu, KaziNazrul University, have delivered their lectures on History of Urdu language and Literature.

Miss SanufaShakil, one of the Alumni members of Government Girls’ General Degree College (Dept. Of Urdu) and Dr. Aftab Alam have taken classes on honorary basis at present.

Seminar and symposium are arranged time to time for the benefit of students. Extension lectures have been organised in which many renowned professor, scholar from different universities and colleges participated. Extension lectures delivered by Rof. S.M. Shabbir (HMC), Dr. Abuzar Hashmi, Additional Librarian of National Library, Dr. Farzana Shaheen, Assistant Professor, Dept of Urdu, Ranigunj Girls’ College, Dr. NadimAhmad, Assistant Professor, Dept of Urdu, Calcutta University.

Students Seminar also arranged by the Dept. Students are presented their research paper in students seminar and very actively participated and focus the different aspects of Urdu Language and Literature.

Students are also participated in seminar outside colleges in West Bengal Urdu Academy, Aliah University and Moulana Azad College. Students are also actively participating in Departmental Half-yearly Wall Magazine entitled “KIRAN”. Students also wrote their thought in College Magazine.

Department of Urdu received donated books from West Bengal Urdu Academy in 2017 and 2020, total no. of books are given WBUA is and Ghalib Institute, New Delhi donated 49 books in 2022 on the great poet Mirza Ghalib. These books are very useful and good resources to know the different aspect of Urdu Language and Literature to the students.

Certificate course (three months) opened by Department of Urdu & Persian, GGGDC entitled “Learn Urdu and Persian to know History” from 03/07/2023 in collaboration with HiralalMazumder Memorial College for women.

The journey was flagged off in March, 2016 with two full time permanent faculty members and with the warm support of the Principal Madam (Officer-in-Charge in those years).

The first batch of students were admitted in 2016-17 academic session. As a new undergraduate College and without any structured publicity, our first batch had two students admitted from which one left within a few weeks. Sociology as an academic discipline, is comparatively young at the institutional levels and specially so at the catchment area of the College.As a new College , we had to open our doors to anyone and everyone who doesn’t have any background of the subject. That was our first and a difficult challenge.

From the next batch onwards (2017-18 onwards) we had students, few in number but interested in the subject. We consider this as one of our point of success. The second batch students scored first class marks in the University examination and pursuing their post graduate studies. They could maintain their excellence there too.

Third, fourth batches too, completed and are employed in different organisations. We thought, we could cross another of our difficult barriers, successfully. The department grew in the infrastructure as well. We could digitise part of our deliveries. With the help of the Principal Madam, the department is now self-sufficient with computer, printer, copier and scanner and other necessary infrastructural facilities.

Also, the department put untiring efforts to train the students in digital learning process. We thought it extremely important, now-a-days, for pursuing in any field of knowledge. Very selectively and as per government allotments, we collected 389 text and reference books in the central library. Apart from this, for the benefit of the students, one of the faculties (Dr.Madhumita Sen) donated around one hundred books to the central library. The Faculties always encouraged their students to do “library -work” as a part of their preparatory efforts on the syllabus. Emphasis are put not only on the prescribed curriculum of the affiliating University, but also on the all-around development of social awareness and sense of duties and responsibilities of each and every individual towards the other. These happened to be part of our greater syllabus. From time to time, we arranged for academic support from guest faculties as per government regulations. These were arranged depending on the scarcity of permanent faculty-members and keeping in mind the need for introducing all the prescribed components in the syllabus.

The department takes adequate initiative to maintain relationship with the parents of the wards through meetings in regular intervals. Keeping above in the background, Sociology department of Government Girl’s General Degree College would like to focus on expanding its activities and creating it an ideal space as a centre for knowledge and research development.

The department of Political Science started its journey in the Govt. Girls’ General Degree College, Ekbalpore, Kolkata w.e.f. 16th April, 2016 following the joining of Jayanta Joy Chattopadhyay, Associate Professor vide transfer from APJ Abdul Kalam, Government College, New Town, Kolkata. The department has two full time teaching posts. Later on 20th June, 2016 Dr. Madhuparna Gupta, Assistant Professor joined this college vide transfer from Chandernagore College. Later she left the college in November, 2018 and subsequently resigned from the WBES. Long after that, Pritin Dutta, Assistant Professor joined this college on 5th October, 2023 vide transfer from Government General Degree College at Tehatta, Nadia. After the retirement of Sri Jayanta Joy Chattopadhyay on 31st December, 2024 the department was run by one faculty. Dr. Shampa Mitra Sanyal, the then Jt. DPI of the Education Directorate joined the department on 30th May, 2025 vide transfer from the Education Directorate, Government of West Bengal.

The Department had two batches of students under the old syllabus initially. Students have been studying CBCS since 2018 and NEP since 2023 in this department. Few students have been obtaining first class across the semesters thereby the overall result of the department is more or less good. Our students attend classes regularly. They are attentive, sincere and disciplined. They participate in sports and cultural competitions regularly. After passing-out, few students are pursuing Post-graduation, few are already employed while few are preparing themselves for competitive examinations. In a nutshell, the department of Political Science is vibrant in nature.

The Department of Persian, Government Girls’ General Degree College, Ekbalpurhas started its journey since the inception of this college in 2016. The department started with two faculty members Dr. Syeda Shariqatul Moula Alquaderi (Principal of the College) and Dr. Md. Shahid Jamil (HoD).

Being an affiliated college under the University of Calcutta, the department in the academic session 2016-2017, started teaching the annual system course offered by the University for undergraduate Honours Students. Later on from 2018-2019 academic session the department started teaching the semester based CBCS course offered by the University of Calcutta together with the annual system. The annual system course curriculum continued upto 2019-2020 academic session.

The faculty members of this department have been playing an important role in imparting education and doing research and translation. It organised a number of State level, Nationaland International seminars. Some of its students, after graduating from this college, have completed their higher studies from other institution and others are continuing their studies in several universities.

The Department of History offers undergraduate courses, both honours and general in History under the University of Calcutta. The qualified and dedicated faculty of the department takes great care in providing academic support and guidance to the students. An important objective of the Department is to instil in the students the capability to think critically and analyse conflicting theories related to history. To widen their academic horizon and supplement the theoretical knowledge of the students, the Department regularly takes the students to various educational tours and also encourages them to participate in academic outreach activities.

History of the Department:

The Department of History began its journey since the inception of the college in 2016 with two faculty members and 10 students in its honours courses in the session 2016-17. Ever since then the Department has come a long way with five batches of students passing out of the college, some of them pursuing higher studies and a few opting for professional courses and entering professional fields. From the session 2023-24, the Department is also offering courses in MDC (under NEP System).

In Government Girl’s General Degree College Department of Hindi was established in the year 2018 with guest faculties. In August, 2025 a full time Teacher was appointed in the college. Thus a full fledged Department started.

Department of English started functioning from the inception of this College in 2016 with Honours. The intake capacity was 25 and thereafter it was enhanced and now it is 31. Students from surrounding areas and different districts come to this college for study. At times there are students from outside the state.

Students take part in co-curricular and extra- curricular activities. Department organises special lectures. After completing the course students are pursuing Postgraduate course and some of them are working as teachers, doing call centre jobs, working in TCS.

The destiny of India is now being shaped in her classrooms. This, we believe, is no more rhetoric. In a world based on science and technology, it is education that determines the level of prosperity, welfare and security of the people.

The Indian Education Commission (1964-66)

The Department of Education was introduced in 2018. The department offers honours course from 2021. The first full-time faculty member Smt.Sutapa Bose joined in 2021. The department follow CBCS&CCF (under NEP) syllabus as directed by University of Culcutta. The department provide infrastructural facilities like classroom, departmental library, also shares all other central infrastructure of the college like ICT enabled classroom, central library etc. Intake capacity for Honours is 30.

Mission and Vission:

Our mission is to provide education not only to acquire knowledge but also to inculcate a sound philosophy for holistic living. We also want to make the classes truly interactive and student-centric to the utmost extent possible.

The number of students in the class should be manageable on the one hand and regularity of attendance is to be made mandatory on the other hand to make a proper judgement of the students’ accomplishment in teaching – learning situation.

Students should be encouraged for self-evaluation and personality development and proper guidance should be provided so that the students strive towards perfection and competence.

The Department of Education strives to provide excellent teaching and learning environment with its focus on continuing education.

Future Plan of the Department:

• To provide more library recourses in future.
• To organize extension activities like lectures, student’s seminar, educational tour etc.

Department of Bengali has been introduced since inception of this college in the year 2016 and the academic session became functional from academic session 2016-17 with Honours, General and Compulsory Additional (MIL) subjects. It was under 1+1+1 New Regulation 2010 of University of Calcutta and in this first session four students took admission in Honours course. From the session 2018-19, CBCS course started with Honours, Generic and AECC 1 in Bengali. From the session 2023, CCF 2022 system has been introduced with 4years Honours, 3years MDC, subsidiary MINOR, IDC and CVAC courses.

Two full time teachers joined initially in 2016 – Dr. Susobhan Mukhopadhyay and Smt. Rupa Banerjee nee Samajpati. After six months Dr. Sampa Sen joined and department was running with three teachers till 20th February 2020. After sad demise of Dr. Susobhan Mukhopadhyay, two full time teachers are there in Bengali Department.

The Department of Arabic was established with the establishment of this college in 2016. It started with Dr. Shafiqul Islam who joined it in 2016 and Prof. Abdul Matin who joined one year later.

Some of its students, after graduating from this college, have completed their higher studies from other institution and others are continuing their studies in several universities.
